After leaving Riverdale I finished Grade 12 at the High School of Montreal and three years at McGill before dropping out to go to Vancouver. After two years (in 1974) I started working for BCTV, then part of the CTV Television Network. A few years ago it was bought by Canwest Global and is now part of the Global Television Network. Last year I celebrated my 30th year with the company and have been a Shipper/Receiver, Film Editor, On-Air Videotape Operator, ENG News Editor and am now a News Feed Coordinator.
In 1983 I married Janis Baker of Edmonton, Alberta and we have two children, Adriaan (20 in Feb. 2005) and Sarah (18 in May 2005). My son is taking Computer Game Programming at the Arts Institute of Vancouver-Burnaby. My daughter is finishing Grade 12 this year and wants to have a career in dance. She is already teaching dance part-time. We have lived in Maple Ridge, BC since 1990 and lived in nearby Pitt Meadows for a few years before that.
In 1997 I got online as the Guide to Investing: Canada for New York based About.com. After they bled enough red ink, they axed three hundred of their guide sites in 2001 including most of the Canadian ones and I started my own website, The Break Out Report (http://breakoutreport.com). Macmillan Publishers came across me on the Internet and asked me to write a book. I ended up writing two, the 2002 and 2003 editions of The 50 Best Science and Technology Stocks for Canadians (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/1553350227/thebreakoutre-20/702-3825277-5203239).
A friend joined me and we started a subscription newsletter called The Break Out Report in October 2002. It comes out twice a month with my partner Ken Ballard writing an issue on US stocks and options and I writing one on Canadian stocks and other investments each month. Hopefully we'll get enough subscribers eventually so I can quit the television business and do this full time. I also want to write a few more books.
